Albert Einstein

1879 — 1955 · physicist · the man who asked first

He did not begin with answers. He began by refusing to accept that the obvious description of the world was complete — riding a beam of light in his head, falling in an elevator, asking what a clock would say if you ran beside it. Every card in this league is one of his questions, handed on.

What he got right

  • Photoelectric effect, 1905. Light arrives in quanta — the work that won the 1921 Nobel, not relativity.
  • Special relativity, 1905. Time and length depend on the observer; the speed of light does not.
  • General relativity, 1915. Gravity is the shape of spacetime, confirmed by the 1919 eclipse.
  • E = mc², 1905. Mass is energy; the most quoted equation in physics.
  • Brownian motion. Gave atomic theory a measurable proof.

What he got wrong

  • Entanglement. He called it spooky action at a distance and spent years arguing it could not be real. Bell's theorem (1964) and the loophole-free tests (2015) settled it against him.
  • The cosmological constant. Added to hold the universe still, then reportedly called his greatest blunder. It turned out to be real — dark energy.
  • Quantum indeterminacy. "God does not play dice" — the evidence says otherwise.

“Spooky action at a distance.”

Letter to Max Born, 1947 — the objection he lost

“I rarely think in words at all.”

Reply to Hadamard's questionnaire, 1945

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Interview with G. S. Viereck, 1929
